Tile Edge Profiles can be one of those details that gets overlooked—until things get ugly…
I recently went on a site evaluation, and I came across two very common ways that people deal with tile edges.
By the way, now is a good time to do a good ole shameless plug!

Anyways, back to the main topic.
In the video above, you can see two common ways that people deal with Tile Edges:
- A PVC (plastic) tile edge profile
- No profile at all
Both might seem fine at first… but the problem is that neither one holds up long term.
Let’s break down why.
Problem #1: PVC Profiles (They Don’t Last)
PVC profiles are usually chosen for one reason:
They’re cheap compared to other alternatives.
But here’s what happens over time:
- They discolor (especially in kitchens and showers)
- They scratch easily
- They can warp or degrade with heat and moisture
And once that happens, there’s no fixing it—you’re replacing it.
What started as a small cost-saving decision ends up affecting the entire look of the installation.
Problem #2: No Tile Edge Profiles
This is even worse.
Leaving tile edges exposed might seem like a clean look—but it creates real issues:
- Chipping on exposed edges
- Rough or unfinished appearance
- No protection at transitions
Tile isn’t designed to be left raw at the edge.
Without a proper finish, it’s only a matter of time before damage shows up.
The Better Option: Metal Profiles
This is why we use metal tile profiles—specifically Schluter.
They solve both problems:
- Durable (won’t chip, crack, or warp)
- Color-stable (no yellowing like PVC)
- Clean finish that actually looks intentional
Whether it’s a square edge, rounded edge, or minimal trim, metal profiles are built to last—and they elevate the entire installation.

The Bottom Line
Tile edges aren’t something you figure out at the end.
If you use cheap materials—or skip it entirely—you’ll see the results later.
- PVC fails over time
- No profile leads to damage
- Metal profiles protect and finish the job the right way
It’s a small detail—but it makes a big difference.
