Zach is going over some trends and the first thing he says made us go OUCH!!
He says: “Tile Backsplashes are out”.
I’m sorry, but no. We’re not letting tile go that easily.
A full-height quartz or stone backsplash can look fantastic. I’m not taking anything away from it. Carrying the countertop material up the wall creates a clean, continuous look with very few visual interruptions.
But that doesn’t make tile outdated. It simply gives homeowners another option.
A Slab Backsplash Creates a Clean Look
Using the same material on the countertop and backsplash can make a kitchen feel larger and more streamlined. It works especially well in modern kitchens where the goal is to keep everything simple.
There are also fewer grout joints to maintain, which is appealing to many homeowners.
When the stone has dramatic veining, extending it up the wall can turn that material into the focal point of the entire kitchen.
It’s a good look. Sometimes it’s a great look.
It just isn’t the only good look…
Tile Can Do Things a Slab Cannot
Tile gives us far more freedom to create something personal.
You can introduce:
- Color
- Texture
- Pattern
- Movement
- Handmade character
- A different shape or scale
A herringbone mosaic, handmade ceramic tile, dimensional tile, or colorful patterned backsplash creates an entirely different feeling than a large slab.
That might be exactly what the kitchen needs.
If the cabinets and countertops are already simple, the backsplash is often the best place to introduce some personality. Without it, the room can start to feel a little too coordinated—like everything showed up wearing the same outfit.
The Layout Still Matters
A beautiful tile will not automatically create a beautiful backsplash.
The installer still needs to consider where the pattern begins, how it meets the cabinets, what happens around the outlets, and where the cuts will land.
Those little decisions are what make the installation look intentional instead of patched together.
This is especially important with detailed mosaics, handmade tiles, or strong geometric patterns. The material gets people’s attention, but the layout determines whether it looks right.
Choose What Fits Your Kitchen
Trends are helpful for inspiration, but they should not make the final decision for you.
A full-height stone backsplash may be perfect for one kitchen. A simple subway tile may fit another. Somewhere else, the right choice could be a bold mosaic that becomes the most memorable feature in the room.
The goal isn’t to prove that your kitchen is following the newest trend. The goal is to create a kitchen that looks good in your home and still feels like you several years from now.
So yes, slab backsplashes are beautiful.
But tile backsplashes are definitely not out.
