We did a fun video in which we reacted to tile tik toks, and came across this clip of a lady “installing” (?) a mosaic tile on a floor…
And then… she starts spreading grout… with a duster?
We were like… what?
We’re starting to see more and more of this:
AI-generated or AI-altered tile videos.
Let’s talk about how to spot them—and whether it matters.
Why Some Tile Videos Look “Too Good”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gotten really good at creating content that looks real.
And honestly, that’s part of the problem.
These videos often have perfect lighting, everything just looks too clean, there’s no mess, too smooth, and in trade videos sometimes the tools being use make no sense at all.
That last one was the giveaway for us.
Using a duster to grout?
What the heck?!
Common Signs a Tile Video Might Be Fake
You don’t need to be an expert to spot it. Turns out our eyes are pretty good at spotting fake.
In video game and visual effects language, there’s something called “the uncanny valley”
“used in reference to the phenomenon whereby a computer-generated figure or humanoid robot bearing a near-identical resemblance to a human being arouses a sense of unease or revulsion in the person viewing it.” – Oxford Languages Dictionary.
The Spielberg movie The Polar Express is often brought up as an example of uncanny valley.
Even though this phenomenon is mainly about spotting fake human depictions, (and AI is getting SO scary good at depicting humans), your eyes know something’s off.
Here are some things to look for in trade videos:
1. Tools Being Used Incorrectly
I think this is one of the biggest tells, I’ve seen tools that straight up don’t exist, or just are the wrong tool for the job.
There’s a good chance it’s not real.
Artificial Intelligence doesn’t “understand” tile—it just predicts what looks right.
2. Movements That Feel Off
AI-generated motion often looks too smooth, lacking variation or imperfection.
Even small things like hand movement or pressure can feel unnatural.
AI still struggles to replicate realistic human motion and interaction with tools.
3. Perfect Results With No Process
AI videos tend to skip the real process, set up, clean up.
You just see instant results, no corrections, no imperfections.
That’s not how trades work! Certainly not how tile works.
4. Small Visual Glitches
Sometimes it’s subtle but you can see it; edges that blur or shift or inconsistent shadows, details that don’t quite line up.
I was actually trying to tell if this video was AI, by paying attention to the reflection on the tiles. Does it match the space? Is it consistent?
Does it even matter?
Here’s the problem.
If you’re not in the trade, these videos could look legit.
And that leads to just bad expectations, or lazy video making. We don’t want to show you fake pristine installs, we want to show you what actually goes on in real life, with real people. And we assume that that’s what you want to watch. Are we wrong?
Are AI Tile Videos All Bad?
Not necessarily. There are some upsides:
Some of them are just plain entertainment, and that’s ok!
In design and tile, there are some videos that can be a great help.
They can be great for visualizing ideas, illustrate concepts, help with inspiration. And they do it quick!
But they shouldn’t replace real-world knowledge or human-made content.
The Simple Test
If you’re watching a tile video and something feels off, ask:
Does this process make sense?
Are the tools being used correctly?
Would this actually work in real life?
If the answer is no… it probably is.
Our thoughts.
In the end AI keeps getting better and better, and it will only continue in that direction.
Fake tile videos are really not that harmful all things considered, there are far more concerning things like taking someone’s likeness and using it without their consent, or things that we don’t even want to mention here.
But it does hurt us creatively as we are trying to bring real-life content.
If you stop and look at it for a few seconds, it’s still easy to spot…for now!
What Do You Think?
We’d love to hear your thoughts on AI content in general!
And we’ll bring you more content like this in the near future, we know this conversation isn’t going away anytime soon.
