Shower niches are a great upgrade, but they need a little planning if you want them to look clean once the tile is finished.
One thing we always pay attention to is how the niche lines up with the tile layout. It might seem like a small detail, but it can make a big difference in the final look.
What Is a Shower Niche?

A shower niche is a built-in shelf or recessed space in the shower wall. Instead of hanging a caddy over the shower head or setting bottles on the floor, a niche gives you a clean spot to store shampoo, soap, razors, and other shower essentials.
They are popular because they are practical and they look good. A well-placed niche keeps the shower organized, saves space, and adds a custom touch to the design.

Why Layout Matters
When you add a niche, you are cutting into the tile layout. If you do not plan ahead, the tile around the niche can end up with tiny cuts, uneven lines, or a pattern that looks like it got interrupted.
That is especially true with patterns like herringbone. Since the tile is already moving in a specific direction, the niche needs to work with the pattern instead of fighting against it.

Measure Before You Cut
Before cutting around the niche, it is worth taking the time to lay out the tile and check your measurements. In this project, the installer dry-fits pieces and makes sure the pattern will land nicely around the opening.
That little bit of extra planning helps avoid awkward cuts and makes the niche look like it was always meant to be there.
A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference
A shower niche is not just a storage spot. It is part of the overall design of the shower.
When it is installed with the tile layout in mind, the whole wall looks cleaner and more intentional. The niche blends in, the pattern flows better, and the finished shower has a more polished look.
At Mann Tile, these are the details we focus on because they are what make a tile installation feel truly finished.
