When people see a failed shower floor, they usually notice the obvious things first.

The tile looks stained. The grout looks dark. There may be mold, mildew, or a smell that never quite goes away. From the surface, it is easy to think the problem is just dirty grout or old tile.

But as Ed explains in this video, the real issue is often underneath the surface.

A lot of shower failures happen because water gets trapped where it should not be. That is one of the biggest reasons we prefer Schluter waterproofing systems over older traditional water-in/water-out shower systems.

The Problem With Trapped Water

That is an important point for homeowners to understand: tile and grout are not the waterproofing system.

Even when tile is installed nicely, water can still make its way through grout joints and into the layers below. That does not automatically mean the shower has failed, but it does mean the waterproofing method behind the tile matters a lot.

If water gets below the tile and has nowhere reliable to go, it can sit there. Over time, that trapped moisture can lead to mold, discoloration, odors, and a shower floor that never really dries out.

How Older Shower Systems Worked

Traditional shower systems were often built with a liner under a deep mud bed.

The idea was that water could pass through the tile and mortar, reach the liner, and then slowly work its way toward the drain. That is where weep holes came in. Weep holes are small openings in the drain assembly that are supposed to let water escape from the mortar bed and enter the drain.

In theory, that sounds like a workable system.

But in real life, that system depends on a lot of things going right.

The mud bed has to be sloped properly. The liner has to be installed correctly. The drain has to function correctly. The weep holes have to stay open. And water has to be able to move through the system instead of getting trapped.

That is a lot of trust to put in tiny drain openings that can easily become blocked with mortar, debris, or buildup.

Why Weep Holes Are a Weak Point

Ed explains that with old systems, if the water did not drain right away, it had to “weep” through the mud bed and into the drain.

That is the part we do not love.

When a shower system is designed around water soaking into a mortar bed and then slowly finding its way out, there is a lot of opportunity for failure. If the weep holes clog, the water does not have a reliable escape path. It can sit in the floor instead.

And once moisture is trapped under the tile, the homeowner may not know there is a problem until the shower starts showing signs of mold, staining, or that damp smell that never seems to go away.

To us, that is why traditional water-in/water-out systems are not the best approach anymore.

Why Schluter Makes More Sense to Us

With a Schluter waterproofing system, the goal is different.

Instead of allowing water to travel deep into the shower assembly, Schluter systems bring the waterproofing closer to the surface. The orange membrane and integrated drain system are designed so water is managed right below the tile and directed toward the drain.

That means the shower is not relying on a deep mud bed to absorb water and then hopefully release it later.

The water has a much shorter path.

That is the part Ed is pointing out in the video: with the Schluter system, water that gets through the tile layer is directed to the drain instead of getting trapped deep in the floor.

Surface Waterproofing Is a Better Approach

At MannTile, we prefer surface-applied waterproofing because it gives us more control over where the water goes.

A shower should not be built around the idea that water is going to soak into the floor and eventually find its way out. We would rather build a system that keeps moisture closer to the surface and moves it toward the drain more directly.

That does not mean every old shower failed immediately. Plenty of traditional showers lasted for years. But we have also seen enough failed showers to know that the old methods have weak points.

And when there is a better system available, we would rather use it.

The Tile Is Only Part of the Shower

A finished shower is not just the tile you see.

It is the prep work, the waterproofing, the drain connection, the slope, the seams, the corners, and all the details hidden behind the finished surface.

That is why we talk about waterproofing so much. It is not the flashiest part of the project, but it is one of the most important.

Pretty tile is great.

But pretty tile over a weak system is still a problem waiting to happen.

Ed’s explanation is a great reminder of why we prefer Schluter systems.

Older water-in/water-out shower systems depend on moisture traveling through a mud bed and escaping through weep holes. When those weep holes clog, water can get trapped, and that trapped water can lead to mold, staining, and long-term issues.

With Schluter, the waterproofing is brought closer to the surface, and the system is designed to direct water toward the drain more efficiently.
