For a while, everyone wants the biggest tile possible. Large format, slab look, fewer grout lines, clean and modern.
Then suddenly, the design world turns around and says, “Actually… what if we went tiny?”

Micro tile and historic-inspired tile are making a comeback, and when they are done well, they can bring a lot of charm, texture, and personality into a bathroom.
What Is Micro Tile?
Micro tile is exactly what it sounds like: very small tile used to create texture, pattern, and detail.
You might see it on shower walls, bathroom floors, niches, feature walls, or even wrapping around benches and curved surfaces. Because the pieces are so small, they can create a really interesting look that feels almost like fabric, texture, or architectural detail.
It is not always the simplest option, but it can definitely make a room feel custom.
Micro tile is kind of like the espresso shot of the tile world. Small, strong, and full of personality.
Why People Like It
One of the reasons micro tile is getting attention is because it feels different from the big, flat surfaces we have been seeing for years.

Not everything has to look brand-new and ultra-modern. Sometimes the goal is warmth, character, and a space that feels like it has been loved for a long time.
The Practical Side
Now, here is where we put on the contractor hat.
Micro tile and historic-inspired tile can look amazing, but they do need planning.
Smaller tile usually means more grout lines. More grout lines means more layout decisions, more installation detail, and sometimes more maintenance depending on where the tile is used.
That does not mean you should avoid it. It just means you should understand what comes with it.
A micro tile shower can be beautiful, but the prep, waterproofing, layout, and grout work all need to be handled carefully. With small tile, little mistakes are easier to notice because there are so many lines for your eye to follow.
Tiny tile does not mean tiny responsibility.
Where These Styles Work Best
Micro tile can be a great choice for shower floors, niches, accent walls, powder rooms, and feature areas where you want texture and interest.
Historic-inspired tile can work beautifully in bathrooms, laundry rooms, backsplashes, and remodels where the homeowner wants something timeless instead of trendy.
The key is using these styles intentionally.
You do not have to cover every inch of the room in tiny tile for it to make an impact. Sometimes one well-designed area is enough.

Are micro tile and historic tile revival for everyone?
Probably not.
Can they be beautiful when they fit the home and are installed well?
Absolutely.
We love when tile brings personality into a space. Whether it is clean and modern, colorful and bold, or classic and full of character, the goal is always the same: thoughtful design and quality installation.
