What Is a Traditional Mud Pan?
A mud pan is a custom shower base built on-site using deck mud—a mixture of sand and cement that is shaped and compacted by hand.
The installer creates the slope manually, forming the shower floor to direct water toward the drain.
For decades, mud pans have been the industry standard and remain a trusted method among experienced tile setters.

Which Option Is Better?
The truth is that neither system is universally better.
The right choice depends on the project.
If the shower has standard dimensions and a compatible drain location, we generally recommend a Schluter system. The installation is often faster, the waterproofing system is well-engineered, and the end result is highly reliable when installed according to manufacturer specifications.
However, when a shower design becomes more complex, a traditional mud pan can offer flexibility that simply isn’t possible with a pre-formed tray.
In many custom homes throughout Englewood, Venice, Port Charlotte, and Southwest Florida, we’ve seen projects where a mud pan was clearly the best solution because of the shower’s size, layout, or design requirements.

“Mud Pans Are Outdated”

While modern shower systems have become more popular, mud pans remain a valuable tool for custom shower construction and are still widely used by experienced tile professionals.
“Schluter Systems Are Only for Beginners”
Also not true.
Many highly skilled tile contractors choose Schluter systems because they appreciate the efficiency, consistency, and integrated waterproofing they provide.
“One Method Lasts Longer Than the Other”
When installed correctly, both systems can provide decades of reliable performance.
The quality of the installation is often more important than the choice of system itself.
Our Recommendation
For most residential shower projects, we lean toward Schluter systems.
We appreciate the consistency, efficiency, and integrated waterproofing they provide. For standard shower configurations, they are often the most practical and reliable solution.
That said, we also recognize the value of traditional mud pans. When a project calls for custom sizing, unique drain placement, curbless entries, or other non-standard features, a properly constructed mud pan may be the better choice.
Rather than viewing these methods as competitors, we view them as different tools for different situations.
The best shower foundation is the one that fits the specific needs of the project.
