Running a business in the trades takes a lot of work. There is always another job to look at, another customer to call back, another estimate to finish, and another problem to solve.
If you are not careful, the work can take over every part of your life.
That is why this piece of advice hits home — and shoutout to Jack The Tiler UK for the motivational video that sparked the reminder: you can build something great, but you also have to pay attention to what really matters along the way.
His advice hits close to home – We Know This Firsthand

Mann Tile is a family business, so this is not just a business lesson for us. It is personal.
Rob, (Mann Tile owner and founder), has spent decades balancing the responsibilities of running a company while also being a husband, a father, and a church leader and a mentor to many young people. That kind of life does not happen by accident. It takes commitment, patience, sacrifice, and a clear sense of priorities.
Like anyone in the trades knows, the work does not always stop when the tools are packed up. There are calls, schedules, decisions, and details that follow you home. But family, faith, and community matter too.
The Balance Is Not Always Easy
A lot of people start a business because they want more freedom. But in the beginning, and sometimes for many years, it can feel like the opposite.
Instead of working fewer hours, you may work more. Instead of clocking out and being done, you carry the responsibility with you. Your phone keeps buzzing. Your mind keeps running through tomorrow’s job. You think about the schedule, the materials, the customer, and the next decision that has to be made.
That does not mean building a business is a bad thing. It just means balance does not happen automatically.
Family Time Matters
It is easy to say, “I’m doing this for my family.”
And that may be true.
But family needs more than provision. They need your time, attention, leadership, and presence. Not just someday when things slow down, but now — in the middle of the busy seasons, the long weeks, and the hard stretches.
People like Rob have lived this out for years. Building a business, raising a large family, staying involved in church, and serving others all require the same thing: showing up consistently.
It’s a blessing that we are a Family Tile Business, And we get to work with some family members. That’s not something to take for granted.
Work Hard, But Stay Grounded
Ambition is not inherently wrong. There is nothing wrong with caring deeply about your craft or wanting your business to succeed.
In fact, we believe work should be done with excellence. Whether it is a tile installation, a customer relationship, or a commitment to family, the details matter.
But success should not come at the cost of losing sight of the life you are working so hard to build.
A strong business is a blessing. A good reputation is valuable. Beautiful tile work matters.
But faith, family, and the people around you matter more.
A Reminder for Contractors, Business Owners, and Anyone Working Hard
The trades can teach you a lot: patience, discipline, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and pride in doing a job the right way.
But life teaches you something even bigger: know what matters most.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is finish the day, put the tools down, and be present with the people God has placed in your life.
At Mann Tile, we care about doing excellent work. But as a family business, we also know that life is bigger than the jobsite.
And again, credit to Jack The Tiler UK for sharing a message that is worth thinking about — not just for tile guys, but for anyone working hard to build something meaningful.
